Quick update:
I am in Berlin. Our tour guide, Gabriel, was British and absolutely charming and funny. I went to the Philharmonic and heard some amazing music. East Berlin is straight out of 1984 and is very depressing. Berlin, in general, not such a pretty city (however it is a hell of a lot cleaner than Amsterdam).
